Vieux Château Certan

If there is an area in the world that represents the elite, the magnificence and the prestige of wine, it is undoubtedly represented by the area surrounding the city of Bordeaux. With its winemaking history of over 2000 years and its majestic Châteaux, imbued with mythical and immortal charm, Bordeaux is surrounded by a unique aura.
The territories of Bordeaux extend in the Aquitaine region, in the extreme south-west of France, in the most northwestern department of the region, the Gironde.
The origins of viticulture in the area date back to Roman times, although the actual birthdate of the Bordeaux vineyard is in the 12th century. The historic areas of Bordeaux are divided between the Left Bank and the Right Bank.
Vieux Château Certan, with its history dating back to the mid-18th century, is one of the oldest wine estates in the Pomerol AOC. It was founded by Jean Demay de Certan - who belonged to a Bordeaux wine trade dynasty - but since 1924 it’s been owned by the Thienpont family, and is managed today by Alexandre Thienpont. In 1988 the premises and the vinification plants were completely renovated. The estate extends over a vineyard area of about 14 hectares, divided into 23 distinct plots, where the varieties of merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon meet. With vines aged on average 50 years, and even some centuries-old plants, the practices adopted between the rows of Vieux Château Certan are environmentally sustainable and exclude the use of any chemical substance. In the cellar, the vinification is traditional and aging takes place in French oak barrels. Elegant, full-bodied and rich, the wines produced by the Vieux Château Certan have always been among the most appreciated and requested of the Pomerol appellation, thanks to their mature complexity and their refined opulence.
