Clos Fourtet

Clos Fourtet was acquired by Philippe Cuvelier in 2001, and has been run by his son Matthieu ever since. Together, father and son supervise and direct the winery towards a thoughtful and progressive philosophical change, in the constant search for excellence. Both passionate about the land, they immediately chose to use organic and biodynamic treatment methods in the vineyard, with the idea of leaving a winery in total harmony with the environment and the nature to future generations.
In the vineyard, the dominant varietal is Merlot, the most famous and cultivated grape around the wine area of Saint-Émilion, which brings smoothness and silkiness on the palate. A small portion is then dedicated to cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, which add aromatic complexity and allow an excellent aging potential to the final product.
Quantities are limited to 40 hl per hectare, while the planting density has recently been increased, from 6000 to 9000 plants per hectare.
The neverending tasting process carried out by Philippe and Matthieu guides the crucial choices that the winery must make throughout the year. Taking samples from barrels and vats, they follow the almost magical transformation from must all the way to finished wine. The remarkable complexity of this wine escapes the most advanced technological analyzes, so the human palate still remains the most reliable judge to evaluate the future evolution and quality of the wines to be.
Clos Fourtet’s wine, classified as "Premier Grand Cru Classé", reflects the best of quality of the Saint-Émilion area. Soft, intriguing and seductive, its aromas are delicately intertwined, in a fascinating demonstration of the terroir’s potential. Labels that represent the culmination of the efforts made by the cellar, which reveal themselves slowly, over time: always alive, in constant development.
