Red Wines from Marche | Montepulciano & Rosso Conero

The Adriatic's Red Treasures

Along Italy's central Adriatic coast, the Marche region crafts distinctive red wines that beautifully express their maritime and hillside terroirs. From the imposing Monte Conero rising above the sea to the rolling hills of Piceno, these wines combine Mediterranean warmth with surprising elegance.

The signature Montepulciano grape finds its unique voice here, particularly in the Conero area, where sea breezes and limestone soils create wines of remarkable depth and refinement. Unlike their Abruzzese cousins, Marche's red wines show a distinctive mineral character and fresh profile that speaks of their coastal influence.

The historic Rosso Conero appellation, centered around Monte Conero's limestone massif, produces the region's most prestigious reds. These wines combine dark fruit intensity with subtle herbal notes and a distinctive saline minerality. The best examples show remarkable aging potential, developing complex tertiary aromas while maintaining their characteristic Mediterranean vitality.

In the Piceno hills, winemakers craft both pure Montepulciano and traditional blends with Sangiovese, creating wines that perfectly balance structure with drinkability. These inland expressions often show more rustic charm and earthiness, reflecting their hillside origins.

Modern producers are increasingly focusing on single-vineyard expressions and sustainable practices, leading to wines of greater precision and terroir expression. This combination of traditional wisdom and contemporary approach is creating some of Italy's most exciting yet undervalued reds.
