SICILY

A wine-producing continent: from the coast to the volcano

Our selection of Sicilian red wines represents a fascinating journey through what can be considered a veritable wine-producing continent. Sicily, an island of extraordinary geographical and pedoclimatic complexity, encompasses a variety of terroirs that is unrivalled in the Mediterranean: from the marine limestone of the southern coasts to the volcanic sands of Etna; from the clayey hills of the inland to the fertile coastal plains. This diversity, combined with a unique heritage of indigenous grape varieties and a thousand-year-old winemaking tradition that has spanned Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman and Spanish rule, has created an extraordinarily rich wine mosaic. Our collection showcases both the big names that have led the qualitative renaissance of Sicilian winemaking in recent decades and the small artisan producers who keep centuries-old traditions alive in remote areas of the island. Each bottle tells not only the story of a grape variety or a territory, but also a story of rebirth: that of a region that has transformed itself from a producer of anonymous blending wines to a protagonist of Italian oenological excellence, rediscovering and promoting its own wine-growing identity with renewed awareness and an international vision.

Nero d'Avola: the sunny soul of the Mediterranean

The undisputed star of our selection is Nero d'Avola, Sicily's leading grape variety, which finds its maximum expression in the provinces of Syracuse, Ragusa and Agrigento. This versatile grape variety, capable of adapting to different terroirs while maintaining its recognisable identity, offers a fascinating range of styles: from the most immediate and fruity versions, characterised by intense notes of ripe cherry, plum and blackberry, supported by a pleasant freshness and soft tannins; to more complex and structured interpretations, often aged in wood, which develop an articulated bouquet of dark fruits, Mediterranean spices, liquorice and cocoa. Our collection explores the different territorial expressions of Nero d'Avola, from the more concentrated and powerful wines of the Noto and Pachino area, where the calcareous soils and warm climate give great structure and ageing potential, to the more elegant and fresh versions of the Ragusa hinterland, to the more modern and refined interpretations of Menfi and Sambuca. Particular attention is paid to historic appellations such as Eloro and Cerasuolo di Vittoria (where Nero d'Avola is traditionally blended with Frappato), as well as the most renowned crus, wines that demonstrate this grape variety's extraordinary ability to accurately express the nuances of the territory and evolve magnificently over time.

The jewels of Etna: volcanic elegance at high altitude

A true revelation in recent years on the international wine scene, Etna reds represent the stylistic opposite of the sunny Nero d'Avola and are a fundamental part of our collection. On historic terraces climbing up to 1,000 metres above sea level on the slopes of Europe's highest active volcano, native grape varieties such as Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio find unique conditions: mineral-rich volcanic soils, marked temperature variations between day and night, and a climate that combines Mediterranean and mountain influences. The result is wines of extraordinary elegance and complexity, often compared to the great Nebbiolos of Piedmont or the Pinot Noirs of Burgundy for their tannic finesse and their ability to evolve over time. The Etna reds selected for our collection are distinguished by a unique aromatic profile, where notes of small red fruits, wilted flowers and spices blend with unmistakable mineral and smoky hints imparted by the volcanic terroir. Our selection highlights the different expressions of the volcano's various slopes – from the cooler, more vertical north slope to the powerful, structured interpretations of the south slope – as well as the work of recovering pre-phylloxera century-old vines that some pioneering producers are carrying out with passion and dedication, offering enthusiasts the opportunity to taste wines that represent an invaluable historical and cultural heritage.

The richness of native varieties: Frappato, Perricone and island rarities

Sicily's extraordinary viticultural biodiversity goes far beyond the celebrated Nero d'Avola and Nerello, and our collection enthusiastically explores the diverse world of other native red grape varieties. Frappato, with its aromatic delicacy and freshness, represents the pure elegance of south-eastern Sicily, with wines of medium structure but extraordinary finesse, characterised by unmistakable notes of wild strawberry, pomegranate, rose and spices, supported by a vibrant acidity that makes them extremely versatile at the table. Perricone (or Pignatello), an ancient grape variety once widespread throughout the island and now rediscovered mainly in the Trapani and Palermo areas, offers wines with intense colour and important structure, with a fascinating aromatic profile of dark fruits, spices and ferrous notes. Our selection also highlights lesser-known but highly interesting varieties such as Nocera del Messinese, Calabrese di Avola (often confused with Nero d'Avola but with distinctive characteristics), pure Nerello Cappuccio and rarities such as Acitana and Minnella nera, grape varieties that had almost disappeared but are now being revived by a few enlightened producers. There is no shortage of Sicilian interpretations of international grape varieties such as Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which in this particular terroir take on distinctive characteristics compared to expressions from other regions, with ideal phenolic maturity and an aromatic profile that combines varietal notes with unmistakable Mediterranean scents.

From historic DOCs to new frontiers: an island in constant evolution

Sicilian viticulture, while rooted in a thousand-year-old tradition, is currently experiencing a period of extraordinary dynamism and experimentation, which our collection recounts in all its nuances. From historic appellations such as Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG, the only Sicilian appellation to boast the highest Italian quality recognition, with its traditional blend of Nero d'Avola and Frappato that combines structure and elegance; to Etna DOC, a true rising star of Italian winemaking that is capturing the attention of international critics; from Faro DOC, a tiny appellation in Messina where ancient blends of native varieties survive; to the broader IGT territorial appellations that allow producers greater creative freedom. Our selection also explores the new frontiers of Sicilian winemaking, such as wines produced in the Iblei or Nebrodi mountains, areas that are still little known but have great potential, and the organic, biodynamic and “natural” interpretations that are redefining the contemporary identity of Sicilian wine. Each bottle in our collection represents not only a territorial or varietal expression, but also a different philosophical approach to viticulture, from the most rigorous respect for tradition to the most courageous innovation, offering enthusiasts a complete overview of the extraordinary vitality of contemporary Sicilian winemaking.

Sicilian red wines are now one of the most exciting and dynamic expressions of the Italian and Mediterranean wine scene. From the generous sunshine of Nero d'Avola to the volcanic elegance of Nerelli dell'Etna, from the aromatic delicacy of Frappato to the structure of Perricone, to the native rarities that continue to be rediscovered, our collection offers a fascinating journey through an island that embodies the history and future of Mediterranean viticulture. Whether you are looking for wines for immediate enjoyment or bottles to age in your cellar, rare collector's items or excellent everyday wines, our selection of Sicilian reds will surprise and delight you with its extraordinary diversity, authenticity and ability to convey the character of a territory that is unique in the world.
