Vermentino di Sardegna DOC "Giunco" 2023 Magnum - Cantina Mesa (Astuccio): Why we like it

There is no other variety of white grape that is as symbolic of Sardinia as the Vermentino grape. The wines that are produced using this grape, especially when they undergo steel tank fermentation such as Mesa’ “Giunco” Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, offer great freshness and a mineral quality that are characterised by marine undertones. These must-try, refreshing and elegant wines are great for accompanying meals.

The origins of Cantina Mesa

Cantina Mesa was founded in 2004 thanks to the intuition of the famous Sardinian advertising executive Gavino Sanna.

The name, which means “table” in Spanish, perfectly represents the idea behind its creation:

a place of conviviality, simplicity, and love for a wonderful land, Sardinia, and in particular the beautiful Sulcis Iglesiente area.

Mesa's unique wines, combining territoriality and innovation

It is in these valleys, characterized by sandy soils, that wines of great character and brightness are produced, starting with the most typical grape varieties of the area: iconic Sardinian red wines such as Carignano and Cannonau and Sardinian white wines such as Vermentino.

In the heart of Sulcis, Cantina Mesa now has 78 hectares of vineyards, 66 of which are owned by the winery, where the vines are trained using the alberello or cordone speronato methods.

Both in the vineyards and in the cellar, the agronomic and oenological management is entrusted to the duo of Stefano Cova from Trentino and Michele Flore from Sardinia, with Gavino Sanna overseeing all aspects of image and marketing. This brings us to Sant'Anna Arresi, where we find a white, unusual, and minimalist structure, surrounded by gentle hills and set amid the green Mediterranean scrub, creating an ideal contrast with the territory that is instead exalted and enhanced in every nuance in the wines.

Then the doors open to reveal approximately 5,000 square meters, spread over three levels and arranged in such a way that grapes and wine can be treated with the utmost respect and care: no mechanical pumps, therefore, but movements that take place through the principle of “natural fall.” Finally, the aging process takes place in the cellar's underground rooms. This is how all Mesa wines are produced, with names full of meaning such as Carignano del Sulcis “Buio,” “Giunco,” “Buio Buio,” and here we are definitely in the realm of fine red wines, and “Opale,” to continue with all the others.

These are territorial wines, fundamentalist, precise and accurate, a faithful expression of a region that, when it comes to wine, is second to none. Discover the best Mesa wines in our wine e-commerce.
